willowlamp’s Two Black Finishes: Black Oxide & Black Colour Chain

Black Flower of Life by willowlamp

A black finish is one of the most requested briefs in contemporary lighting design. It reads as architectural, grounded and enduring, sitting comfortably in interiors that range from industrial-inspired to minimalist to richly layered. At willowlamp, black is available in two distinct finishes that behave very differently in a space: Black oxide and black colour chain. Choosing between them is not simply an aesthetic preference. It is a material decision that affects how a piece interacts with light, how it relates to surrounding surfaces, and what atmosphere it creates.

What is willowlamp's new Black Oxide finish?

Black oxide is a chemical treatment applied to steel, producing a silky, matte surface that absorbs light. At willowlamp, the treatment is applied consistently across both the ball chain and the laser-cut mild steel frame and other steel components, so the entire piece reads as a single unified material. There are no contrasting components, no chrome accents, no variation in sheen. The result is a finish that feels quiet and considered, with a depth that rewards close attention.

Because the frame and chain are treated as one black finish, black oxide pieces have a particularly strong graphic quality. The form reads clearly and shadows cast by the chain take on a particular softness, as the piece as a whole feels rooted and particularly tactile.

Black oxide works especially well in spaces with natural materials, concrete, raw timber, stone and dark upholstery, and popular black interior finishes where its matte quality sits in harmony with the surrounding palette rather than interrupting it. It is also a strong choice for hospitality environments where a moody, intimate atmosphere is the goal. You can see this finish at its most dramatic in the custom Enchanted Faraway Tree at Boscheuvel House in Bishopscourt, where the matte black oxide frame and chains unify the complex branching structure into a single atmospheric presence. In this particular installation, antique metal chains were chosen as complimentary finishes, which are also matte.

How is willowlamp's Black Colour Chain Different?

Black colour chain is a gloss-coated finish applied over mild steel chain. The chain itself has a polished, reflective surface that catches and scatters light, creating a very different effect to black oxide. Crucially, the components on a black colour piece use brushed stainless steel frames rather than treated mild steel, which introduces a subtle contrast between the reflective chain and the cooler, satin-finished metalwork.

The effect is a finish that feels sharper than black oxide. The polish of the chain means the piece responds actively to its layered lighting environment, shifting in character as light conditions change throughout the day. In well-lit spaces or rooms with strong directional lighting, the gloss chain introduces a quiet sparkle that adds visual energy and infuses luxury to the design.

Black colour chain is well suited to modern interiors with clean lines, polished surfaces and a cooler material palette. It also works beautifully in high contrast schemes where a reflective black reads as a strong design statement rather than a recessive one. The A-Peal pendant in black colour chain illustrates this well, the gloss finish animating the familiar citrus-peel silhouette and giving it a sharper, more contemporary edge.

How to Choose Between Them?

The simplest way to think about it: black oxide absorbs, black colour reflects. One quiets a space, the other activates it. If your interior is textural, earthy and material-led, black oxide will feel at home. If the space is clean, graphic and contemporary with strong artificial lighting, black colour chain will perform with more presence.

Both finishes are available across willowlamp’s full collection and can be specified for bespoke and hospitality projects.
