Custom Luxury Lighting: willowlamp’s Sculptural Finishes, Forms & Edges

When you look at a willowlamp chandelier, you’re not just seeing light — you’re seeing the sculptural possibilities of chain, form, and shadow, brought to life through precise craftsmanship and limitless imagination. From refined finishes to monumental 3D installations, every detail can be customised to suit your design vision and architectural space.

This is how we bring light to life — and how your vision becomes tangible.

Customising the Edge: Five Ways to Finish a Form

The way a chandelier ends — its bottom edge — plays a vital role in defining the mood, silhouette, and personality of the piece. At willowlamp, we offer five primary edge treatments, each with its own aesthetic language:

Cropped Edge (Straight Cut Chain)
A clean, crisp horizontal finish that brings clarity and modernism. It’s our simplest and most minimal edge — hard-lined, defined, and symmetrical.

Willowed Edge (Feathered Cut Chain)
This style features soft, uneven lengths that taper off into fine, delicate strands. Inspired by the gentle sway of a willow tree, it creates a romantic, disappearing edge that feels airy and light.

Looped Edge (Looped Chain)
By looping the ball chain back to the frame, this finish resembles petal-like scallops. It eliminates “loose ends” and brings a subtle softness to geometric designs — perfect for organic or floral shapes.

Shaped Edge (Customised Shape Cutting)
By cutting into the curtain itself, we create complex, often 3D contours — from waves and points to symmetrical motifs. This can be subtle or dramatically architectural, depending on the shape.

Custom Sculpted Volumes
Where edges evolve into surfaces, we step into full sculptural territory — forming entirely new 3D shapes and interwoven patterns.

Contouring into 3D Forms: From Shape to Surface to Volume

The real magic happens when we move beyond flat curtain drops and begin carving volume. Using our patented notch system, willowlamp luminaires can be transformed into three-dimensional works of art. Here’s how we layer complexity:

Simple Extrusions
We start by cutting a singular profile into the chain curtain, then allow that cut to extrude down into space — shaping simple, elegant 3D forms.

Complex Extrusions
From there, we cluster and compound forms — layering leaf-like shapes, mandala motifs, or architectural structures into multidimensional compositions.

Monumental Scale
This approach can be scaled up infinitely — and has been. From luxury hotels to grand lobbies, we’ve created installations that span entire ceilings and define the identity of a space.

Looping and Pod Forms
Unlike the planar method of cutting shapes, these 3D volumes arise from layering looped chains in graduated heights — creating sensual, bulbous forms that appear almost to breathe.

Three Levels of Custom Design

We offer a tiered system that makes it easy to realise your vision — whether you’re adjusting an existing model or commissioning a one-of-a-kind showpiece:

Level 1: Simple Customising
Upscaling or downscaling one of our signature designs. These are familiar forms with new proportions — ideal for clients who want something personal without starting from scratch.

Level 2: New Custom Design
Collaborative concept development based on your brief, or a willowlamp reinterpretation crafted to suit your space and vision. These pieces often feature unique shapes, hybrid edges, or new materials — designed using our proprietary notch technique.

Level 3: Signature Concepts
This is where art meets architecture. Our Signature Concepts service includes large-scale custom ceiling installations and immersive sculptural forms that command attention and elevate environments.

Designed for Practicality: Packaging and Maintenance

Flat-pack engineering
All willowlamp products are shipped in eco-conscious, flat-packed crates — designed to reduce shipping costs and environmental impact while offering a seamless, unfolding installation experience.

Care and cleaning
Maintaining your piece is simple:

✦ Feather dust regularly and wipe gently with a dry, soft cloth
✦ For the frame, use a microfibre cloth with stainless-steel cleaner
✦ Never apply liquid-based cleaners to the chains
✦ If chains tangle, gently comb through with your fingers

Important note for coastal areas:
Natural materials may oxidise in humid, salty environments — including rust-resistant and stainless-steel options.
