It is an honour to have Adam Hoets’ latest design included in Visi magazine’s “Anatomy of…” feature in their Spring Issue 133.
When approached by feature writer Jo Buitendach, an archaeologist with a particular penchant for design and décor, we knew she would do our Stalactite story justice. Who better to unravel the story behind this iconic piece than someone who understands the interplay between history, nature, and creativity?
The article explores the design philosophy of willowlamp’s founder and creative director, Adam Hoets. It sheds light on how nature serves as his point of departure for creating remarkable lighting designs. It delves into the unique approach Adam took with the Stalactite chandelier, where art, form, and function seamlessly converge. There’s a palpable tension between the diaphanous, translucent shapes created by the cascading ball chain and the solid permanence of the stainless steel frames. The frame’s patented notch system vaguely resembles interlocking teeth, adding to the poetic contrast in materiality and expression of this design.
Our most recent design creation, the Stalactite chandelier, draws inspiration from the intricate textures of cave formations, particularly the magnificent stalactites found in South Africa’s renowned Cango Caves. These icicle-shaped formations, hanging from cave ceilings, are created over centuries by the steady drip of mineral-laden water. Each stalactite reflects the passage of time, a story of ancient mineral precipitation. The Stalactite chandelier captures this essence, meticulously crafting every curve to mimic nature’s complex beauty. Pleated ball chain curtains replicate the rippling striations of stalactites, layering luxuriously to form an elegant structure that brings these natural wonders into interior spaces.
Available in both suspended and ceiling-mounted options, with a standard model measuring 1000mm in diameter, the Stalactite chandelier makes a bold design statement. Designed by Adam Hoets in 2022, this chandelier exemplifies willowlamp’s commitment to timeless design, where art, nature, and craftsmanship come together in perfect harmony.
